Round Table New Leader Handout

Not only am I a den leader I also teach round table and this month I was in charge of the new leader handouts. We tare taking off next month so we are covering two core values...honesty and courage.So here is what I did.

Father's Day gift

I wanted to do something simple that the boys could make for their dads this year, but I also wanted it to be something that their dad would use. So I decided to do a pen holder for them to put on their desks. 

I had originally planned another idea but decided it would be a little more work. I will share it with you in case you want to make it.

 I made these boxes using the printable set from Parties and Patterns

 Then I filled them with different candy.

 Bought root beer in a glass bottle, cause the glass bottle looks so much cooler than just a can of soda.

Here it is all done. The printable even has instructions on how to make the box, I made mine a bit bigger because I used different wood then it calls for.

Since I didn't end up using this, I took the box and am going to paint it black adding felt to the bottom(so it doesn't scratch up my table) and will put it on the bottom shelf of my end table to hold all the charging cords for cameras and i pods.

Pinewood Derby Neckerchief Slides

We are making neckerchief slides as participation awards for our boys for our pinewood derby. I found the idea HERE

Materials needed:

• baseboard (we got 75ish from a 5ft section)
• spray paint in whatever colors you would like plus black
• thumb tacks
• pvc pipe and cutters.
• silver sharpie
• hot glue gun

Cut 1 inch pieces from baseboard


Poke thumb tacks into piece of cardboard or cardboard box

Spray paint black...I did two coats.

Spray paint your "cars" the colors you want them, in my case I did them green

red and

blue.

place painted thumbtacks in sides of  "cars"

Use a hot glue gun to attach PVC pipe piece(about 1/2" wide) to back of "car".

Use a silver sharpie, or white paint to add headlights. You can also add stickers to it.

PVC pipe Ring toss

Last year when I was at Scout-O-Rama I found the coolest idea, for a ring toss game. I wish I knew whose idea it was so I can give credit where it is due, but the paper I have has no information on that just the instructions on how to make it.

Isn't this so cool. You can take it apart to store it and then re-assemble it when it is needed. If you take it apart and let the boys take turns building it, it will pass off Wolf E4c and Bear E18b(part)

Here is what you need to make one of these:

5 - 6"x 3/4" pvc pipe pieces (4 for base one for post)
1- 4"x 3/4" pvc pipe piece(post)
1- 8x 3/4" pvc pipe piece(post)
1- 10" x 3/4"(post)
1- 4 way 3/4" pvc connector (base center)
4- 90 degree 3/4" PVC elbows(connects base to posts)
4- 3/4" PVC end cap(top of posts)

RINGS

3- 16" x 3/16" inside dimension vinyl tubing (rings)
3- 1"x 3/16" diameter dowel (connects tubing ends)
4- different  colors duct tape (secures rings and color codes caps)

I was able to get 4 rings out of the tubing, but one was a little bit smaller, you really only need 3 rings.

All about mom coasters

Here is a simple, inexpensive,usable, but cute project you can have your scouts make for mom, or grandma for Mother's Day

Materials need

• 4-8-4.5" x 4.5" tiles(you can use any amount you prefer. these can be found at any hardware store for between .16-.25cents
• Windex
• paper towel
• Modge Podge
• foam brush
• felt(which I forgot in the picture)
• Printable from  HERE or you can make your own. 

Step 1: Start by cleaning/drying each tile with windex

Step 2: Have your child answer the questions on each square and or draw a picture, use the blank one for a picture of the child. (I would have had them color their pictures or use markers to write their answers so there is a little more color to them)

Step 3:Cut out each of the squares

Step 4: apply a thin coat of modge podge on the back of one of the papers(it is kind of hard to see in the picture) and apply to the center of the tile(picture below), I had the after thought of adding a piece of scrapbook paper to the tile first before adding the question(I would cut mine as a 4x4 square).

Step 5: Once tile is completely dry apply a thin coat of modge podge on top of the tile over the paper, then let dry. 

Step 6: Repeat step 5 

Repeat this process with each tile until you are done

Step 6: Cut a 4"x4" square out of felt and hot glue onto the bottom of each tile this way there is no worries of the tiles scratching the surface.(Using white felt makes it hard to see, sorry)

Tie all of the tiles together with a cute ribbon and you have a cute mother's day gift.

This could pass off  Wolf E17a,c if you wrap them  or E17d if you do not wrap them. Also part of Bear 22b(square knot)

Grass head guys

Not only am I a wolf den leader, but for the last several months I have been teaching at Round Table so this month I decided to share something that we did last year with my boys:

Grass head guys

These guys are pretty easy to make and the boys absolutely love watching them grow.

What you will need to make your own grass head guy:

• nylons(knee highs or an old pair cut off at the knee)
• Quick grow grass seed
• 3 rubber bands
• top soil
• yoplait yogurt container (washed and dried)
• googly eyes
• pipe cleaner 
• e6000 glue

I know I have a cup instead of a yogurt container, and that is because I tried using a cup first and it didn't work very well. 

What you will need to do to put them together:

• place handful of grass seed in the toe of the stocking(it helps to have an extra set of hands to stretch the nylon out)
• add soil on top of the seeds until well firm and makes the shape of a head.

• next shape the face, make a nose shape and put an elastic around it to hold it into shape. Do the same for each ear(if you want to add a mustache add some grass seed under his nose before moving onto the next step)

• Tighten the stocking at the bottom and tie a knot in it. Leave the rest of the nylon to hang down as this will absorb the water from the container, if it it too long you can cut some off.

• Glue on his eyes and his pipe cleaner mouth with e6000 glue (*DO THIS BEFORE WATERING, I learned the hard way also make sure the glue is dry before watering)

• Place in yogurt container and put in sunny window 
• water him everyday and you should start to see growth in approximately 7 days. 
• trim hair however you want.

Bobcat Trail Lapbook Lesson

If you aren't familiar with lapbook lessons, they are used a lot in homeschooling. It is a great hands on method of teaching your child about anything.

 I found the idea for a bobcat lapbook HERE. I loved the idea of it, but there were no printables to go along with it, so I decided to create my own,after 6 plus hours of working on them, I finally had them done.

If you need to know how to fold a lapbook HERE is a quick tutorial, or you can google for more resources.

I printed them out and then started cutting out my "mini books" from construction paper. I thought I kept the measurements for all of them, but I can't find them so I am guessing I threw them out like I do everything in my house. 

Here is the front of the book

inside. This is how I laid mine out because I didn't want them in order.

Motto- this is just a piece of paper folded in half. Put the number 6 square on the front.

Cub scout handshake- I used a matchbook style book for this one. (basically a folded flap book like above with a bit extra added and stapled, staple before gluing to the folder)

Law of the pack- make a pocket, I used the printable one from HERE, then put the law of the pack onto a  piece of construction paper that is a tad bigger and cut into strips to make into a puzzle, place the pieces inside your pocket.

Webelos meaning- use another pocket, place number 3 on front

inside mount meaning onto construction paper make sure you leave enough room to write pull at the top.

Cub scout Sign- this is a folded flap book place number 4 on front flap

Inside place meaning on top flap and picture of sign on bottom

Cub scout salute- make a folded flap book, but this time place the fold on the side.

and the meaning behind the picture. Staple all of them together before gluing to the folder (see picture 2 above)

In the middle top of the folder make a large folded flap book and place the cub scout promise(#1) on the front flap

Inside place the meaning on the top flap and the promise on the bottom.

in the middle section on the bottom left place the Character connection, on the left place the smaller bobcat trail square then under that write list examples here:. The boys can list examples as you talk about  the character connection (under commit)
